The Adventure Motorcycle Boom
In 2004, Ewan McGregor and childhood friend Charley Boorman set off on an epic motorcycle adventure, which was aired on our TV screens under the title ‘The Long Way Round’, and since then it appears that McGregor and Boorman have inspired a boom in the adventure motorcycle market.
In The Long Way Round, the pair rode 20,000 miles, on their BMW GS R1200s, across 12 countries and 19 time zones in just 115 days. Together, they travelled through Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Siberia, Alaska, Canada, North America and then finished in New York – visiting UNICEF Projects along the way.
Back to 2016, and industry publication Power Sports Business have reported a significant increase in the adventure motorcycle market. The segment apparently accounted for 5% of all motorcycle sales back in 2011, but now it has doubled in size to make up 10% of the market. According to the publication, the sales are all high value, as adventure bikers are more likely to invest in a top of the line bikes and accessories, (to hopefully avoid a disaster on the ride,) than any other type of rider.
If you’ve been inspired to plan a motorcycle trip abroad, just remember to invest in quality travel insurance before you leave home. Most standard travel insurance policies will only cover bikes up to 250cc, and won’t cover things like repatriation of your bike or additional travel expenses if you are unable to ride it home.
At Holidaysafe we offer a range of specialist motorcycle travel insurance policies, which have been created by bikers, for biker. Visit Holidaysafe.co.uk for more information.
