An Idiot Abroad Three

On Friday 30th November, An Idiot Abroad: The Short Way Round, returned for a third series.

The first series saw Karl Pilkington visiting the Seven Wonders of the World, including The Great Wall of China, The Taj Mahal in India and the Pyramids in Egypt.

The second series ‘The Bucket List’ saw a braver Karl experience the ultimate things to do before you die, for example bungee jumping in New Zealand, swimming with sharks in Australia and going on safari in South Africa.

For its third series, Ricky Gervais has teamed Karl up with actor Warwick Davis, who became famous for playing roles in Star Wars and Willow. The duo has been challenged to follow in the footsteps of explorer Marco Polo, by travelling from Italy to China.

Marco Polo was a Venetian merchant traveller, who lived from 1254-1324. In 1272 (when he was just Seventeen years old) Marco Polo travelled from Italy to Asia with his father and Uncle, a journey which lasted around 23 years and covered 15,000 miles.

The amazing popularity of this show has come from Karl’s reaction and resistance to travelling and experiencing anything. In our modern society most people are desperate to travel abroad, to encounter faraway places and different cultures, so it is hilarious to see someone who is so resistant to having life experiences. On the other hand, having a positive and eager companion might just be what Karl needs to enjoy his travels.

If you’re interested in watching the travel madness unravel, there are only three episodes, which will finish on the 14th December 2012.
