Are we Addicted to Technology?

Holidays are meant to be a time to escape the stresses of our daily routines; a chance for us to really relax and unwind. However, according to a recent survey by travel agent Sunshine.co.uk nearly 50% of us cannot leave work at home, and check our emails every day whilst on holiday.

The poll, which questioned people in management positions, found that people working in PR, Marketing, Sales, Media and Legal roles were the guiltiest of taking their work abroad with them.
This is a large percentage, but on a positive note only a quarter of these people actually did any work on their holiday, they simply kept ‘on top of’ their emails – just in case.
However, three quarters admitted to checking their work emails whilst on a family holiday, and unsurprisingly, for many this had caused friction with their loved ones.
It seems we are becoming a generation of ‘technology addicts’, who cannot function without their daily dose – with many travellers taking their laptops, tablet computers, and smart phones away with them, not to mention checking the Wi-Fi before they book their holiday!
Unfortunately, our constant need to be tapped into the World Wide Web means that we actually miss out on the entire reason for travel and holidays; to spend quality time with the people we love, to get away from it all, to relax and to experience another place and culture.
Instead, why not consider closing your emails, and using your gadgets to take pictures and videos of your holiday, or to research fantastic day trips, activities and things to do with your loved ones? Gadgets can be a fantastic resource whilst abroad, and not just for staying in touch with people at home, but next time why not try connecting to help you disconnect and relax!
If you’re planning to travel with gadgets, just remember to make sure they are covered against any unforeseen holiday disasters, for example theft, damage or loss. There are several ways you can do this, for example check whether your home insurance covers valuables abroad, if you have a work phone or laptop check that your business has adequate cover, or alternatively purchase quality travel insurance which includes cover for gadgets. Without insurance, you could find yourself forced to disconnect for all the wrong reasons!
