One of the most pleasurable things to do on holiday is to go shopping and hunt for bargains in the world’s bazaars and boutiques. The problem is that we do not always know whether we are getting the real thing at a bargain price, or replica.
There are statistics available that show that approximately 45% of us purchase fake designer goods when on holiday. Apparently nearly £0.5bn a year is spent on replica items.
Over 65% of these sales are to people who are fully aware that the items are not genuine; after all, any sensible person would know that you cannot obtain the real thing for the prices that are being offered. In Europe, especially Spain, Turkey and Greece, most of these sales are in respect of handbags, sunglasses and DVD’s, once you venture further afield the situation can become more serious.
In the Far East, places like Thailand and China have a thriving replica industry where it is difficult to know if you are getting the real thing or not. These are not your street vendors coming into the restaurant at night, or laying their wares out on the promenade. These are actual shops that are replicas of the real thing! In China they have, apparently, created a completely fake Apple Store selling replica i-phones and i-pads!
Whilst the making and selling of replica items is wrong, for many people they know that buying one of these items will be the closest they will come to owning the real thing. They also know that the item will never have the durability and reliability of the real thing, and accept that it will probably break, fade or stop working once they return home. A few people however, will be genuinely duped, and will only come to realise their mistake when the item stops working or breaks.
You should always beware of bargains – there is an old adage which says ‘you get what you pay for’ and this is especially true when it comes to buying travel insurance. Make sure that you are getting the right cover for the premium you are paying, taking into account the cost of your holiday, where you are travelling to and the state of your health.
