What made you decide to take the leap and go travelling?

I have always had a passion for travel, I first went to America when I got accepted at Camp America, and then my second stint was Australia because I was offered a job out there.

What is the longest you have been away?

2 years

How did you plan your trips? (E.g. through a gap year website or by yourself?)

I obviously planned my trip to America through Camp America, then I planned my trip to Australia by myself, and we decided to use a travel agent for the Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Malaysia trips.

Were there any low points during your time away from home? If so what were they?

Getting stuck in hurricane Katrina!

Did you work during your trip? How easy was it to find jobs/did you enjoy them?

I was offered a job in Australia before I went out there, and when I was travelling around Australia it was very easy to get a job. There are adverts everywhere in hostels and internet cafes, you just need to keep an eye out. I did enjoy my jobs, except fruit picking for my second visa, it was very hard work, but it was also great fun when I look back at it now.

Is there anywhere you would recommend everyone visit?

Karijini and the Kimberleys (Western Australia), Perhentian Islands (Malaysia), Bali, Sihanoukville…I could go on!

Kirsty 3

What piece of travel gear would you recommend to everyone?

I would recommend a diary to write about everywhere they had been and what they had done.

What one piece of advice would you give anyone planning to go travelling?

Go with an open mind. Do what you want to do.

Would you recommend travelling solo or in a group?

That’s tough…..Solo because then you have no one else to worry about, but then its good fun being in a group.
