My family used to go to ostblock holiday spots usually Croatia though Bulgaria was also an option. I was about 7 or so, I didn’t do any serious traveling outside of central Europe (Austria, Czech, Poland etc) until I went to London for University.
Staying home makes your experiences very limited. Before I went to London, I couldn’t think of living anywhere else, not because of fear but because I considered my home town suitable and I didn’t ask for more. Then I just said why not and ended up in London. Strangely enough, most of my peers (1/2 I guess) went the same route and are studying in foreign countries, mostly in EU. Most of my friends are still in the UK; others are in Denmark, Germany etc. This massive exodus of high school graduates is a very strange generational thing.
Two years and counting.
I usually don’t plan.
No, I actually don’t have a GP in London and I have yet to register in Japan.
Hostels or couch-surfing.
Yes. Actually most travellers I know (real travellers, backpacking through Asia etc.) find that to be the most interesting part of travelling.
They’re usually terrible and easy to get.
Budapest rocks. The best bars in Europe and the city itself looks like grim post-communist Paris.
