The World’s Savviest Backpacker?
To be a successful Longstay traveller and backpacker, you have to be savvy. From saving up before you leave, to managing your finances during your extended trip, you have to be wise with your money. If you’re planning a backpacking adventure, take a leaf out of Scott Keyes’ book.
Scott Keyes is a 28 year old traveller from the US, who is planning to visit 13 countries on his next trip, involving 21 flights and spanning over 20,000 miles. This may not sound out of the ordinary for a backpacker, however the extraordinary thing about Mr Keyes is that he is doing all this for free.
Well, it has cost him nearly 137,000 frequent flyer miles, but apart from that Mr Keyes has spent very little planning his round the world trip, including first class flights and pre-booked accommodation.
Mr Keyes is a writer so clocks up quite a few miles travelling for work, and this has led to his great collection of frequent flyer miles and credit card points. He decided to book his latest trip when he realised he had some spare time between returning from Mexico (where he has been working).
The round the world trip will involve stops in Germany, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Lithuania, Finland, Trinidad, St. Lucia, Nicaragua and Grenada.
Mr Keyes is such an expert in affordable (and free) travel that he has written two books on the subject, called ‘How to Fly for Free’ and ‘How to Find Free Flights’. His advice? Apparently the best way to find the cheapest flights is be completely flexible with times, dates and destinations.
