Top 2016 New Year’s Eve Destinations
A night out for New Year’s Eve can easily be the biggest let down of the year – expensive drinks, overcharging and a long queue for cabs home. Instead, why don’t you make 2017 the best New Year’s ever, by visiting one of our top destinations below.
Amsterdam, the Netherlands
If you prefer to wander and explore, Amsterdam is the perfect New Year’s Eve destination for you. The city is small enough for you to visit multiple events – stand and watch the fireworks from one of the many bridges, then head to one of the squares (Rembrandtplein, Nieuwmarkt, Museumplein and Dam Square) for the real party.
During the day consider attending the weird and wonderful annual pancake race, then in the evening head for the Brandenburg Gate for Berlin’s biggest celebrations. Teufelsberg and Viktoriapark are also great places to view the fireworks.
Every year Scotland holds its annual ‘Hogmanay’ New Year’s Eve celebrations, starting on the 31st December with a torchlight procession and ending on the 1st January with an epic celebration at midnight. Throughout the three day festival there are live converts and spectacular events – so you won’t have a chance to get bored.
Most people probably wouldn’t consider India when thinking about New Year’s celebrations, but think about dancing on the beach, warm sand between your toes, twinkling fairy lights, palm trees and sequinned saris. There are parties and fireworks displays all over the coast, so do some research and pick the best one for you.
Hong Kong, China
For the best view of the amazing annual fireworks display over Victoria Harbour, head to one of the city’s many world famous rooftop bars, Sugar bar and The Peninsula are great options. If you want to get even higher, consider the world’s second tallest bar; The Ritz-Carlton.
Kih Phangan, Thailand
Although Thailand is known for its ‘full-moon’ beach parties, their New Year’s Eve celebrations are definitely the best – they usually start as soon as it gets dark, and continue well into the next afternoon. If you can’t handle partying for over 12 hours (I don’t know many people who could!), consider having a nice meal of fresh fish, then heading to the party just before midnight, dance the night away and then go for a refreshing dawn swim (as long as you haven’t had too much to drink – safety first).
The idea of being in London for New Year’s will either fill you with excitement or dread, but if you plan your trip properly you could have the best celebrations of your life! You could watch the amazing fireworks along the Thames (make sure you buy a ticket), head to The Ritz for a black tie extravaganza, or even visit the Dark Circus – the options really are endless.
New York, USA
New Year’s Eve in New York features on the bucket list of many a traveller – who doesn’t want to watch the ball drop in Times Square at least once in their lives! For a taste of luxury, visit the Renaissance Hotel’s R Lounge, it has floor-to-ceiling views of the action to ensure you won’t miss out whilst warm inside sipping on a cocktail.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Due to the heat, most people choose against nightclubs and instead opt for epic street parties, including live bands and champagne. Then, every year two million people flock to Rio’s beaches to watch the incredible fireworks display, but make sure you wear white – it’s customary and is said to bring good luck for the year ahead.
It may mean a very long flight, but Sydney is one of the best places in the world to spend New Year’s Eve (we saved the best till last!). Hire a boat, pick a spot in Sydney harbour, open the champagne and wait for the awe-inspiring fireworks display on the bridge. Alternatively, sail out to Cockatoo Island for a more private view of the celebrations.
