Am I covered for treatment in the UK when returning from a holiday abroad?
Travel Insurance is designed to get people home and into the care of the NHS or perhaps a private healthcare scheme if the person involved is a member
If I am rushed home in an emergency at what point does my cover end?
Travel Insurance is designed to get people home and into the care of the NHS or perhaps a private healthcare scheme if the person involved is a member. If the situation called for evacuation of a casualty back to the UK by air ambulance, the traveller would be met on arrival by an ambulance (paid for by the insurance company) to take them to hospital, at which point the cover ends.
How do I get medical assistance when I am away?
Please contact our Emergency Assistance Facilities 24 hour Emergency advice line on +44 (0) 845 260 3260. You will need to have your policy details and policy number to hand to verify your cover. Their role is to guide and advise you, and to liaise with the treating doctors where appropriate. If you have to make any payments relating to sickness overseas remember to hold onto all the receipts as you'll need these when making a claim.
cWhat is an EHIC?
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) replaced the previous E111 certificate in January 2006. The card entitles the holder to receive medical treatment provided by the state hospitals within the country being visited in the EU. It provides you with same benefits as the local residents. In some countries (France for example) you may have to make a contribution towards the treatment you receive.
You can obtain a card through the Post Office or by completing a form over the internet (which is considerably quicker). Other than your name and address they will require your National Insurance number.
If your EHIC card is presented and accepted at a state hospital, your policy excess may be waived if a reduction in costs has been obtained.
Do I have to pay my medical bills myself?
If you are asked to pay a small cost for medicines and/or outpatient treatment, it is often easier to settle your bill direct, keep all receipts and claim for the costs incurred on your return home.
If your treatment is more extensive or you are admitted as an in-patient, the Emergency Assistance Facilities must be contacted as soon as possible. If you do not do this, then payment of any medical bills cannot be guaranteed.
If in any doubt, please contact the Emergency Assistance Facilities who can discuss your options and can also arrange for any medical expenses covered by the policy, to be paid direct to the hospital/clinic.
The policy would automatically extend to cover the person receiving treatment in hospital and for one other person who is required to remain with them as advised by the treating medical team.
Can I have cover for Psychological conditions?
Psychological conditions are excluded from all policies. Psychological conditions are stress, anxiety (which would include fear of flying, travelling by boat etc), depression, eating disorders (such as anorexia, bulimia etc) or any form of mental instability.
I am travelling to Europe, why do I need insurance if I have an EHIC?
European Health Insurance Card is not a substitute for travel insurance and will only cover you for medical treatment you may need whilst abroad. It will not get you home (repatriation). Travel insurance will provide repatriation cover as well as cover for cancellation, personal possessions, money, liability etc, which are not covered by EHIC.

Will I automatically get Helicopter Rescue?
Ski patrollers are generally well trained and experienced at assessing injuries. They manage the evacuation of the injured person from the mountain and to hospital in the manner most appropriate to the patients’ injury. They will decide what is appropriate for the circumstances regardless of insurer. Their priority will always be the patient. Serious cases often involve helicopters but, more often, a combination of sled and ski lift is more immediate and appropriate. Other factors such as weather are also taken into account. Please note, it is not uncommon to be asked for proof of insurance whilst on the mountain.
I have received an outstanding invoice for medical treatment abroad, what should I do?
If you have an existing emergency medical expenses claim with us, please forward the original invoice to us quoting your claim reference number and we will arrange payment of the invoice.
If you have not submitted a claim to us, please obtain an Emergency medical expenses claim form and return the completed form to us along with the outstanding invoice and other supporting documentation requested
General FAQ's
The airline has damaged my case. Can I make a claim on my insurance policy?
Firstly, a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) must be obtained from the airline in the baggage reclaim area, which acknowledges the damage.
Secondly, you should make a claim against the airline or their ground handlers as soon as possible (within 7 days). They may supply a replacement case from their store cupboard.
The PIR does not itself constitute a formal claim. You will need to write to the airline, within certain time limits, enclosing a copy of the PIR.
If you are unsuccessful, you can then make a claim under your travel insurance policy. However, please note that the policy excess would apply.

Why do I need insurance for trips in the UK?
Wherever you holiday there are some aspects of travel that carry the same risks as those abroad. We have listed below a few of the possible risks that you may wish to think about.
- You may want to consider what would happen if you needed to cancel your holiday before travelling, you may not be able to recover the cost of your holiday or any pre-paid trips.
- Are you travelling across water? What would happen if your journey was delayed?
- What would happen if your luggage was damaged or stolen? Can you be sure that your Household Contents insurance would cover your loss and if so, do you want to lose your no claims discount?
- If you were admitted to hospital, would you wish to be transferred to a more local facility closer to home?
Depending on the kind of holiday you have booked and the amount of travelling you plan to do, it is worth having the peace of mind in exchange for a few pounds.
