UK Staycations Soar to Seven Year High

According to official statistics released by Visit England, staycations have reached a record high in the UK, with nearly 20 million domestic trips in the first quarter of 2015 alone.

The figures also found that overall spending was up nearly 25% compared to last year, reaching £3.5 billion. Almost half of accommodation providers and over 55% of attractions agreed with this trend, and confirmed they had seen an increase in visitors and spending.

Officials are attributing the increase on a number of factors, including the fantastic UK weather over recent months, and a number of past or upcoming events including;

• Historical events – like the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta and the 50th anniversary of Winston Churchill

• Cultural events – such as the London Pride Parade

• Musical events – like Glastonbury, V Festival plus Reading and Leeds festivals

• Sporting events – such as Wimbledon, The Ashes and the Rugby Union World Cup

These statistics are not just fantastic for the British economy, but also for Britain as a whole, as it proves we are a country worth exploring. We may not have guaranteed weather like other parts of Europe, but we do offer a whole host of cultural experiences just waiting to be enjoyed.

If you’re planning a staycation, you still need to invest in quality travel insurance to protect you and your trip against a holiday disaster. Many people wrongly assume that they don’t need travel insurance when staying in the UK, but you may still need protection against things like cancellation and trip disruption.
