A holiday, a baby and a $726,000 Bill!
The day your child is born is supposed to be one of the happiest days of your life; however for one Australian couple it meant a $726,000 medical bill. The couple were on holiday in Vancouver when Rachel Evans went into labour prematurely, her baby, whom she named Piper, needed emergency neonatal care. Piper was hospitalised for 90 days, totalling a bill of $707,000 alone, with the labour costing the couple $19,000.
Rachel Evans and her partner John Kan had purchased travel insurance, and even added extra cover because Rachel was pregnant. However the couple did not read their policy carefully enough and therefore did not realise that the actual birth of the child would not be covered by their insurer.
This is an important lesson to anyone who travels abroad. Simply purchasing a cheap policy will not ensure that you have adequate cover. If you are planning to travel abroad it is imperative that you research insurance that offers cover for your needs. For example, if you are travelling with lots of gadgets, sporting equipment, children, people with pre-existing medical conditions, or if you are planning to partake in activities such as skiing or even safari – a normal policy may not cover you completely.
