Beginning a Travel Adventure
When people think about Longstay travel, the majority will picture a young student wearing a huge backpack and travelling around Europe or Asia. However, one couple are defying this stereotype by spending their retirement backpacking around the world and raising money for charity in the process.
Mr and Mrs Carver are both in their early 70s, and have been well and truly bitten by the travel bug. When the travelling duo embark on an adventure they only book one or two nights’ accommodation, and then see where the trip takes them, armed only with a guide book and a couple of backpacks. They are obviously extremely brave and adventurous, as they once booked a trip to Antarctica with only three hours’ notice!
The husband and wife team most recently travelled to Burma for five weeks, a trip which raised over £3,000 for charities including a local hospice, Air Ambulance and Scouts services. Their next trip will be another five week excursion this time to Cambodia, a popular backpacking destination.
The couple has encountered their fair share of travel disasters, including an earthquake, a runaway train carriage and a distinct lack of accommodation in a remote destination.
