With the recent news that one of the UK’s leading travel agents, Thomas Cook, nearly went bust last week, we couldn’t help weighing up which is better; DIY holidays or ready made packages? The company, which has been operating for 170 years, had to be bailed out last week as it reported cash flow problems due to a ‘seasonal low point’. It has been reported that more than 200 of its high street branches will close in the near future, causing at lease 1,100 job losses.
Holiday packages and Travel Agents seem to have fallen out of favour in recent years, with the ease of internet browsing, and discount hotels and flights easy to track down. Plus, we no longer need to rely on the expert opinions of travel agents, as customer reviews and detailed descriptions of locations are easy to research in the comfort of our own homes.
However, maybe we should turn back to the knowledge of the travel agent, to look into holidays we may not even dream of for ourselves, or for the more difficult to plan trips.
Nevertheless, if Thomas Cook is saved from the brink of collapse, it will be very interesting to see how they plan to lure the public back, and what deals they can offer.
