France takes Crown for World’s Best Ski Resort
Val Thorens in France has been voted ‘Best Ski Resort in the World’ for the third time in four years at the annual World Ski Awards, which aims to celebrate all things winter sports related. Over 1.6 million people from 85 countries around the world voted in the 2016 awards.
According to the judges, Val Thorens was chosen due to its great skiing, warm atmosphere, breath taking views, exceptional snow conditions and ‘pioneering spirit’. It is the highest resort in Europe – making snow pretty reliable, and is the largest ski area in the world (covering 3 Vallées).
The resort claim their success is down to their decision to hand out customer surveys six years ago, to ask how they could improve. Based on this feedback the resort have planned to spend over £700million in renovations between 2010 and 2020. One such innovation including a new ‘Ski Flux’ system, which monitors how busy each piste is in real-time – a first for France.
