Whilst many of us got through the winter still looking brown thanks to spray tans, there is no doubt that you cannot beat the healthy glow of a natural tan, and for most people the best time to get this is whilst they are on holiday.
So, what tips are there to ensure that you get a nice healthy tan rather than have your holiday ruined by painful sunburn, peeling skin, and a lobster red complexion, that always seems to make a Brit on holiday stand out in the crowd?

Well the first and most important thing to do is take your time – there is no point in trying to get that tan in the first day. People with fair skin should really spend no more that two hours a day actually exposing their bodies to the sun, and even then they should do this in 30 minute sessions. After the first 3 or 4 days, you will be able to extend this period to 3 or 4 hours a day.
Always slap on a good suntan cream, use a very high factor for the first few days and then reduce the factor rating as your tan develops.
As you would when roasting a joint of meat, remember to turn over regularly so that you tan evenly. A white front and red back is not a good look on the dance floor!
Do not sit out in the sun when it is at its hottest – usually between 1pm and 3pm. Why do you think our continental friends take a midday siesta?
Try to avoid alcohol during the day; booze and sun do not mix. Too many people have a lunchtime tipple, and then fall asleep in the sun, ending up burnt and sore with their holiday spoilt.
Drink plenty of water to keep the body hydrated, and take frequent dips in the pool to cool down.
After you have showered, apply plenty of after sun lotion to moisturise your skin, and reapply before you go to bed.
If you are unfortunate enough to burn, have a cool bath with vinegar in it and soak yourself for twenty minutes! Yoghurt is also very effective as is cucumber. If you have actually blistered you should seek medical advice straight away.
Hopefully though, you will be sensible, have a really great holiday and come home with a perfect suntan that will be envy of your pale skinned friends.
