Tips for a healthy flight

Flying is one of the quickest and safest ways to travel, but it is not necessarily the healthiest. Sitting in one position for too long is not good for our muscles, posture or circulation.

So what can we do to make sure that we have a healthy flight?

  • Travel light – don’t stress yourself trying to cram everything into your suitcase and then worry about it being overweight – think multi-purpose, smart and light.
  • Leave plenty of time to get to the airport, check-in and get through security – you will be more relaxed, and have more time to shop in duty free!
  • In-Flight

  • Put your luggage in the overhead compartment – this will give you more legroom.
  • Drink plenty of water, and avoid caffeine and alcohol if possible as these cause de-hydration, which can make you tired and irritable.
  • Change position frequently, if on a long haul flight get up and stretch your legs every two hours.
  • Try some seated exercises – these are usually shown in the in-flight magazine.
  • Sit upright in your seat, don’t cross your legs for too long and try to keep your magazine or book at eye level so that your neck and back are straight.
  • Try to get some rest – even if you can’t sleep, just sitting with your eyes closed can help recharge your batteries.
  • When coming in to land if you want to counter the build up of pressure in your ears, try chewing, swallowing, holding your nose and blowing gently, or tugging your ear lobes.
  • On Arrival

  • Stretch out tight muscles and walk as rapidly as possible, as this will get your blood circulating.
  • When you retrieve your luggage, stand close to the conveyor belt so you can lift your case straight off without twisting your back. Always use a trolley or have a case with wheels
  • Eat a light meal and go for a stroll in the sunshine – this will help you acclimatise, especially if you have changed time zones.
  • One final way to have a stress free flight and holiday is to make sure that you have a good travel insurance policy so that you are fully covered for travel delays and lost luggage.
