Top 2015/16 Winter Destinations
Every year millions of Brits head off for winter breaks, and according to research by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), nearly 50% of them are jetting off in search of winter sun. However, winter sports holidays are catching up, accounting for nearly 20% of all trips.
To help anyone planning a winter break, here are our top 10 winter sun vs winter sports destinations.
Austria – If you’re looking for a mixture of powder and nightlife then Austria is the destination for you. St Anton is apparently the ‘King’ of the party resorts; it has a challenging ski area and offers some of the best après-ski in the world.
Canada – one of the world’s most popular ski destinations, Canada offers a whole host of resorts just waiting to be explored. The snow record is brilliant and you can choose between quiet and popular slopes, e.g. the beautiful Whistler Vs. the smaller but perfectly formed Jasper.
Finland – if you’re looking for a destination which offers more than skiing, then Finland is the place for you – specifically Levi. As well as great skiing, Levi also offers snowmobiling, dog sledding, reindeer spotting and a Santa’s grotto. However, the ‘piece de resistance’ is definitely the chance to see the amazing Northern Lights – best in February.
France – a top contender in the European ski offering, France is popular for its close proximity to the UK and the great choice of resorts. Experts recommend Val d’Isère for its 300km of piste, amazing off piste areas and fine après-ski.
– if you’re up for a long haul adventure then the United States offers a wealth of choice, the majority including big mountains, beautiful hotels and great powder. Aspen in Colorado is a firm favourite, with a great snow fall record and 300 days of sunshine per year.
Australia – one of the top contenders for winter sun, Australia has its summer during our winter – so you never have to experience a wintry UK day again! Australia really does offer something for everyone, from the metropolitan glamour of Sydney to the rugged outback and the sensational Great Barrier Reef.
Greece – when travelling as a family with young children, a winter break can sometimes seem impossible – won’t you have to stick them on a long haul flight to find winter sun? Well Greece could be a perfect option for you. The weather is great all through autumn, and although it can get a little unpredictable over the winter months, the weather should still be good enough for hikes and adventures.
Kenya – the white sand beaches and great weather are amazing, but Kenya made our list for its fantastic wildlife. Why not leave the beach behind for a few days and take a guided safari trek through one of the many national parks? Spot the big 5 for a full house.
Thailand – if you’re looking for a cultural experience then Thailand is perfect for you. There are a whole host of islands to choose from, great beaches, beautiful weather plus hundreds of temples and cultural sites to explore. The Golden Buddha in Bangkok is a must visit, plus the 700 year old city of Chiang Mai.
The Caribbean – when looking at pictures of the Caribbean islands it’s easy to understand why so many people flock there for winter sun every year – it really does seem like paradise compared to the grey UK. Choose from a whole host of islands, all with different personalities, great hotels and breath taking beaches.
