Cancer Research UK has launched a new campaign called ‘Dryathlon’, to encourage people to stop drinking throughout January. In return for giving up your favourite tipple for 31 days, you can ask friends, family and colleagues to sponsor you – raising vital cash to fund the charity’s continued research.

According to their ‘Alcohol Calculator’, if you drink five pints a week you could save £66 and avoid 5,314 calories! Similarly, if you drink two bottles of wine a week, you could save £35 and 2,037 calories – so not only will you be helping a great cause, but you will also help your wallet and waistline recover after Christmas.

Experts have gone a step further, and advise that a month without drinking alcohol could help improve things like sleep patterns, concentration, energy levels, moods, weight loss, digestion, immune system, skin, cholesterol levels plus much more.

If you’re considering a Dryathlon, you can sign up and get support via the Cancer Research UK website, where you can also choose to go it alone or join/form a team. Worried you might fall off the wagon? Don’t worry, just acknowledge your slip up and donate £20 to absolve your ‘sin’!
