Travel Trend Predictions for 2016

The Travel and Financial industries are always looking to predict future trends, whether they be top destinations or international issues, and now two recent surveys have highlighted some interesting travel trends, which they believe will shape travel in 2016.

The first survey, conducted by Sainsbury’s Bank found that the most popular type of trip for holidaymakers in 2016 will be city breaks, with nearly 30% of all people surveyed confirming they will be indulging in a short metropolitan break this year. Interesting, only 13% said they were planning a beach holiday, closely followed by activity holidays at 10% and spa breaks at 8%.
The survey also found that respondents were planning to spend an average of just under £850 on their holiday per person, with one in seven confirming they had saved all year to afford their annual holiday. This seems to suggest that price is a massive factor for holidaymakers, yet only 24% had made use of ‘early bird’ discounts by booking their holiday before the end of 2015.
The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) conducted a separate study in partnership with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to create their ‘destinations to watch’ list for 2016. Their top emerging destinations include;
• Abu Dhabi

• Canada

• China

• France

• Hawaii

• Iceland

• Iran

• Italy

• Peru

• Poland

• Australia

• Sri Lanka
ABTA also highlighted recent world events, which have apparently created a shift in traveller confidence to certain destinations they now perceive to be ‘high risk’. They believe this will push travellers to book more ‘tried and tested’ destinations like Spain, and to try more adventurous activities during their trip, to keep that feeling of adventure.
