Worldwide travel up 13% with older holidaymakers escaping UK for trips abroad this year, says

Leading travel insurance specialist has seen a rise in holidaymakers escaping the UK to head abroad for ski and sea. Data has shown the changing attitudes and travel trends in holiday choices.

When it comes to winter sports destinations, it seems that Europe’s popularity is waning, with an increase in travelers heading further abroad. has seen a rise of 13% in proportion of worldwide (including USA) policies sold so far this year, while sales of Europe-wide policies fell by 14%.

In a recent survey of over 4,000 people in the UK, respondents stated that winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding are considered to be more social activities, with almost 75% of respondents going with friends or family. With the rising popularity of multi-generational family holidays, this perhaps explains the rise in over-65s heading to the slopes. has seen over 12% of their winter sports policies being sold to over-65s in the last three years.

Cruises are becoming more and more popular and many now choose to take a cruise of a lifetime, often costing tens of thousands of pounds, after retirement. Cruises at Christmas are a great time to go either to Scandinavia or somewhere a little warmer. has found that sales of cruise policies so far this year are already up by 15% compared with 2013.

With Sterling currently strong, European holidays have become more affordable and it seems that cruise-goers are bucking the travel trend of going further afield, with data from revealing that a larger proportion of people are now choosing to take their cruise in Europe. While 25% of sea travellers took a European cruise in 2009, 2014 looks to have around 80% of them Europe-bound.
