Flying with Babies: What Parents Need to Know Before Take-Off
Summer holidays are a wonderful time to relax and make memories and just because you now have a baby or toddler doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a well-earned holiday abroad. Flying with babies can feel a bit daunting, but with some good planning and a calm mindset, your journey can be much easier.
Here are our top tips for flying with babies, perfect for UK families heading off on a summer holiday.
1. Baby Passports
First things first, your baby needs their own passport to travel abroad. You can’t add them to your passport anymore. If your baby hasn’t travelled before, make sure you apply for their passport well in advance, especially during the busy summer period. A child’s passport is valid for 5 years, so always double-check that it’s still in date before you book anything.

2. Keeping Your Baby Calm and Happy
Flying can be strange and overwhelming for a baby, so comfort is key. Bring their favourite comfort item, like a soft toy, blanket, or dummy. These little things can make a big difference in helping them feel safe and settled.
Feeding your baby during take-off and landing, whether breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or using a dummy, helps ease pressure in their ears and reduces the chances of them getting upset.
3. Toys and Entertainment
Babies don’t need loads of toys, but having a few small ones can really help pass the time. Think soft toys, sensory books, or teething rings. Avoid anything too noisy or bulky -remember, you’ll be carrying everything through the airport and onto the plane.
4. Snacks and Baby Food
If your baby is on solids, bring simple snacks like fruit pouches, baby rice cakes, or soft fruit. These can help keep them happy and distracted.
You are allowed to bring baby milk, formula, and food through security, even in larger amounts than the usual liquid limits, but you might be asked to taste them. For more on airport security and baby food, check Heathrow’s guidance for travelling with babies.
Always pack more than you think you’ll need, just in case your flight is delayed.
5. Sleep on the Plane
A well-rested baby makes a much smoother flight. Bring a familiar blanket or comforter, and try to stick to your baby’s regular nap times if possible. On long-haul flights, many airlines offer a bassinet for babies, but you’ll need to book this ahead of time. Check with your airline early.
A compact travel pillow or cover for your carrier or pram can help block out light and create a cosy nap space.
6. Plan for Delays and Stay Flexible
Summer can be a busy and unpredictable time to fly, so plan for extra waiting time. Bring more nappies, wipes, clothes, snacks, and milk than you think you’ll need and don’t forget a spare top for yourself too.
When flying with babies, having proper family travel insurance gives peace of mind in case anything doesn’t go to plan – whether it’s illness, cancellations, or lost baggage.
